Expert Tips on How to Remove Blood from Carpet

Life doesn’t always go the way we want to. It gets messy, too, especially with children and pets in your home. We’re talking about your carpet and all the stains that these floor coverings are prone to all year-round. One of the common carpet stains is bloodstains. Check out these expert tips on how to remove blood from the carpet.

Remove blood out of carpets

Sometimes, homeowners aren’t there at the time of the accident and cannot attend to the bloodstain immediately. If possible, however, remove the stain when it’s still wet. How you remove the stain depends on whether the blood stain is still wet or has dried. But if the stain has dried, there are still several tips you can follow. However, you must remember that one approach may not be practical for all carpets as they come in different kinds of fiber.

For fresh or wet bloodstains, follow the guidelines below:

Blot

Fresh blood stains are easier to remove. Start the process by blotting the blood using a paper towel or clean cloth. Change the paper towel and replace it with a new one when it’s already soaked. Start blotting from the outside and work your way into the center of the stain. Be careful not to rub as this would only spread the bloodstain even further.

Use cold water

Fill a spray bottle with cold water and wet the blood. Let it sit and soak for a few minutes. You can also use club soda or tonic water. Avoid applying hot water to a bloodstain, as the high temperature will set the stain on the carpet instead. Repeat the process until the stain is gone. Replace the cloth or paper towel that you use to dry the area once soaked.

You can also use other water mixture, including water with Ammonia and water with detergent. Both solutions are effective, but you need to be careful when applying them. Water mixed with Ammonia shouldn’t be used or woolen carpet.

Salt Treatment

Bloodstains are too strong sometimes that you need more than just cold water. If the stain remains, try using salt. Make a paste of salt and old water in a bowl and put a small amount directly into the bloodstain. Leave it to sit for at least 5 minutes or more. Blot the salt and the stain with a clean cloth. Make sure to check if the stain is coming out or not.

For dried blood stains, follow the guidelines below:

Shampoo and Ammonia mix

Ammonia is an effective way to get rid of bloodstain, may it be wet or dried. But you must handle it with care as it may damage your carpet fibers. You can use Ammonia on its own or use shampoo to begin the process. With shampoo or detergent, there’s a lesser risk of wool damage.

Mix a cup of water and two teaspoons of shampoo in a spray bottle and shake the solution. Use a cloth to blot the stain dry before you spray your ammonia mix. Let it settle for at least five minutes and blot the area dry again. Rinse it with clean water and start the blotting and drying process again. Be careful when dealing with Ammonia as it can produce toxic fumes. Use gloves and mask and keep the room well-ventilated.

Getting the stain out of the carpet is challenging but certainly not an impossible task. You just have to act fast, and you need to use the right approaches to restore your carpet’s look. The secret is to blot the stain and not rub. Don’t forget to use cold water and not hot water to prevent the stain from seeping further into the fiber.

Expert Carpet Cleaning Life Hacks

Many home and property owners would love to think that they’re getting their carpet cleaning right. They vacuum, apply solutions, dry them out, and then puts them back to where they belong in their home.

How often should you clean your carpet?

Vacuum at least once a month to make your carpet last longer. Vacuuming removes dust, dirt, and other soil particles from the carpet. The dirt won’t seep into the carpet fibers when you vacuum regularly.

It’s a good cycle, and it works every time – until the cleaning process doesn’t work anymore.

In reality, carpet cleaning is not only about vacuuming or air-drying them. The same is true for just steaming the carpets yourself. There are cases where professional steaming is the only way to keep the carpet looking as new and as pristine. They have the experience and the technology to deal with the dirt in your carpet and ensure that it’s completely clean.

A clean carpet, however, isn’t just for home aesthetics as well. It also protects your home and your family as it improves the indoor air quality of your home. This is a huge issue, especially today, when billions of people worldwide are suffering from indoor allergies.

Easy Way to Clean Carpets by Hand

Here are some carpet cleaning life hacks you can use to improve your carpet care routine.

Carpet cleaning made easy.

When carpet cleaning, it’s best to try out what you want to do in a small carpet area before putting it on the rest of it.

Ice cubes for dents

Use ice cubes to get rid of dents. Put it on the surface of the cleaned carpet and let it melt. Damp it with a soft, clean towel and leave it to dry out completely before vacuuming it. Use the spoon to lift the carpet fiber.

Bay leaves to dry clean.

Make your mixture using the ingredients:

  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • Two bay leaves (instead os using 1 tbsp of whole cloves)
  • ¼ cup of cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp of Borax

Blend all the ingredients well until it turns to powder. Put it on a top sprinkle container and sprinkle it on the carpet. Leave it for a few hours and vacuum it after some time. This mix can be used as a carpet freshener as well.

Baking soda as a carpet freshener

Commercial fresheners come in various scents, but if you want to try a cheaper alternative without chemicals. You can use baking soda to absorb the moisture and the foul smell of your carpet. Sprinkle a layer of baking soda on the carpet and let it sit for an hour or so. You’ll get better results if you leave it overnight. Vacuum the carpet to get the baking soda out.

Ice cubes to remove chewing gums

Unlike stains, you can’t remove chewing gums immediately while it’s still wet. It breaks away and stretches that it become more difficult to get it out. You can’t also let it dry for hours to avoid melding it to the carpet fibers. Your next solution is to freeze the gum using ice cubes. Hold the ice cubes to the gum for 30 seconds or until the gum freezes and solidifies. It’s easier to remove the gum when it’s already firm. Use water to clean all the residue.

Essential oils for a fresher carpet

Make your mix of essential oils. Mix 2 cups of baking soda and about 15 – 20 drops of your favorite essential oil and blend into a top sprinkle container. Shake and mix the ingredients well and sprinkle it on the carpet. Leave it for a few minutes before cleaning it. You can use this mix to get rid of kitchen stains and remove pet urine odors as well.

Iron to remove stains

Another carpet cleaning hack is to use an iron to remove stains. Use water and white vinegar; 2 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar will do. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray it to the stained area. Remember to always clean the surface of the carpet first before spraying your solution. Cover the stain with a clean, damp towel, and iron it for a few seconds. Repeat the process until the stain is removed. This method, however, doesn’t work for ink or dye stains.

Use these carpet cleaning tips the next time you’re doing your regular carpet cleaning routine. If the stains and the dirt are too persistent, you can always call in the carpet cleaning experts’ help!

Home Care – The Best Way to Clean Carpet

We know, carpet cleaning is a challenge sometimes. There’s just so much stain and dirt that removing them is a daunting job. Many homeowners share the same sentiments. You are not alone in this struggle. Experts have the best care tips and solutions when it comes to carpet cleaning.

If you want to do some home care and you want to make your carpet look fresh and new, then you need to learn the best way to clean carpet. We have compiled a list of effective and affordable ways for you to tackle the dirt on your carpet. Check out these methods and try them on your home’s carpet.

Vacuum as often as possible

Your vacuum cleaner is your trusted equipment and is considered the best way to clean carpet. The home carpet is a giant air filter and it seems that apart from the aesthetics and comfort, its main job is to collect all that dust and dirt in your home. The dust and dirt will wear your carpet fibers and will eventually damage the integrity of the carpet. With frequent vacuuming, you’re able to extend the longevity of your carpet and you’re also keeping its beauty.

How to deep clean carpet

Lint Roller is your friend

Lint roller is an effective tool to get rid of those hairs, crumbs, and curd on your carpet. These things just don’t go away with vacuum cleaning. It’s even more difficult to use your vacuum if your carpets have long hairs. The solution? Lint rollers! Lint rollers are your go-to especially if you pet dogs and cats in your home.

Squeegee the pet hairs away

The pet hairs are difficult to remove, everyone with pets can attest to that. As mentioned earlier, the lint rollers can be useful but sometimes, the lint roller isn’t just enough. If that happens, your next friend is a squeegee. We know it’s for the window but it’s an effective tool for getting rid of those hairs too. It’s a handheld tool designed to take away the dislodge gunk, the first, and other substances that stick to the walls. The same is true for the pet hairs on short hair carpets. So, the next time you see a squeegee, take it home because it’s not only for the windows and other flat surfaces, it’s for your carpet too.

Iron the stain away

Iron is also considered the best way to clean carpet. Using the iron includes a three-step process.

Vacuum the stain

You first need to vacuum the stained area of the carpet to remove all the hard particles and only leave the stains. It’s what you call prep work.

Use a water and vinegar mixture

The second step is to treat the spot using a vinegar and water mixture with a 3:1 ratio. Allow the solution to set in the stained spot and let it work its magic. Give it some time, a five-minute window will do.

Iron the stain

The third step is to finally use the iron. Take a clean towel and place it on top of the stained area then use the heated iron on top. The pressure and heat of the iron will help transfer the stain from the carpet to the towel. It works like a reverse water tattoo.

Carpet by blotting the stain from inwards to the outside

Blot, not rub

The usual instinct is to rub away the stain. After all, we often rub away the dirt on surfaces all the time. But that’s not the same with carpet stains. Remember the mantra: blot not rub. Rubbing the stain is the surest way to let that stain spread further. Protect the integrity of your carpet by blotting the stain from inwards to the outside.

Use baking soda to remove stains

Oil is a difficult substance to remove from your carpet but it’s not too difficult when you use baking soda. Apply baking soda to the stained area and leave it until the soda absorbs the stain. Give it some time and use your vacuum to take away all the baking soda. When that’s done and all that oil has been absorbed, it’s time to dab and blot away the stain.

All these tips are effective ways to remove all the stains on your carpet. However, if all these don’t do the job, you may need to call in the help of professional carpet cleaners.

Choosing the Carpets Easy to Clean

Are you looking for a carpet for your home? There are several kinds of rugs to choose from, and you may be overwhelmed with the number of choices you have. When picking up a carpet, the color isn’t the only thing you need to consider. You want the kind of carpets that are easy to clean. Knowing the carpet type is both practical and efficient.

Kinds of carpets easy to clean

There are usually four types of carpets in terms of material. We have Nylon, Olefin, polyester, and wool.

Nylon

Nylon is a strong fiber that is more resistant to wear and tear mold, and other chemicals. It’s an easy choice as it lasts more and it’s easier to clean. Steam cleaning is handy for nylon carpets. Among the different types, Nylon is the most resistant to stains.

The downfall:

However, Nylon’s downfall is that it’s a synthetic fiber that is easily stained with typical foods and beverage spills. It also loses its color with bleach, such as chlorine.

Nylon is an excellent choice for heavily used rooms, including staircases, living rooms, and hallways. Avoid using nylon carpets for your kitchen, bathroom, and other areas where it’s near bleaches and moisture.

Olefin

Another term Olefin is polypropylene, which is also a favored choice after Nylon. The Olefin fibers are resistant to abrasion, mildew, and moisture. Carpets made out of Olefin are also easy to clean and survives foot traffic quite well. Since it’s strong, Olefin carpets are often used as artificial sports turf. Olefin carpets are water-resistant, including water-based spills and acid-dye spills like Kool-Aid. Unlike Nylon, it doesn’t lose its color even with strong chemicals.

The downfall:

Olefin isn’t as durable as Nylon. After cleaning it, the soils tend to appear on the surface when the fibers dry up. It also easily attracts oily dirt, so it frequently needs cleaning.

Carpets made out of Olefin is an excellent choice for areas near a swimming pool or basements. It’s a wrong choice for areas near greases such as garages.

Polyester

10% of homeowners favor polyester carpets for many reasons, and the first one is the cost. It’s made out of budget material. This type of carpet is semi-resistant to bleaches and chemicals, and it’s also naturally stain-resistant.

The downfall:

This kind is easily attracted to the soil, and like Olefin, the soil and dirt tend to move to the surface when it dries.

Polyester carpets are your carpet of choice for bedrooms and other areas with less traffic.

Wool

This kind of carpet holds the smallest market share, but still, it has its good things. It is highly durable and has warm fibers and colors. It is available in an array of colors, and it is made of warm fiber. The color and texture is an excellent addition to the overall aesthetics of your home. Wool carpets make it the right choice for every part of the house.

The downfall:

Wool is the most expensive kind, and the colors dissolve in chlorine bleach. Despite its price, it doesn’t bode well with strong chemicals.

Choosing the right carpet is essential, but it’s equally critical to know how to keep them clean. It’s not just avoiding stains, vacuuming, and taking the soils out. There is so much more to carpet cleaning than that. If you want a well-maintained carpet, you can always hire a professional carpet cleaners to have your carpet cleaned and maintained regularly for you.

Carpet Water Damage – To Replace or To Restore?

Homeowners are often left wondering what to do with their carpets, especially if it’s damaged. Carpet water damage is a common problem among property owners, most often during the rainy season. Many would opt for saving their carpets the replacing them because it’s more cost-efficient that way. However, repairing a damaged carpet is a tricky thing.

There are several factors to consider before you decide what to do with your damaged carpet. It includes the carpet’s age and quality, the installation type, the type of floodwater involved, and others.

There are three main types of floodwater

Clean, uncontaminated water

Clear, clean water is often from a broken pipe or rainwater and has no contaminants in it. Carpets damaged with Category 1 have a high chance of getting restored only if it’s fixed in less than 24-48 hours. If the water stays in the carpet for longer than that, the damage will worsen, and the water damage will go to Category 2. Professional cleaners can fix this carpet damage and can restore both the padding and the carpet fiber. Proper sanitation and remediation procedures ensure that the carpet is back to what it looks like before the carpet water damage.

Greywater

This is a Category 2 carpet water damage. The water is contaminated and may cause sickness if swallowed or touched. Category 2 water includes overflow water from washing machines, dishwashers, toilet overflows, sump pump failure, etc. Carpets with Category 2 damage takes much effort to salvage. The paddings can no longer be fixed, but the carpet can still be saved. Category 2 damage must be dealt with in less than 48 hours.

Blackwater

Blackwater is highly contaminated with harmful bacteria and pathogens. Examples of blackwater are sewage, toilet backflows, seawater floods, river, streams, storms, and similar weather-related flooding. Category 3 damage is far too irreparable. Your best option is to replace your carpet as a restoration will hardly work.

Carpet Water Damage Repair

Cleaning mistakes to avoid after water damage

Cleaning after a flood is a difficult task, mainly because of the number of things you need to inspect and the colossal work that awaits you. Homeowners want to ensure that their home is back to its pristine condition. Before starting your cleaning project, you need to call on the help of a water damage restoration company to bring the water system back to normal.

When you’re ready to do the cleanup and restoration of your home, take note of the following things you should avoid.

Tip #1 Avoid using products with the intention of masking the odor

Do not use air fresheners or scented carpet products. Do not attempt to cover the musty or mildew scent, as it’s a way of covering the growth of mold in your carpet. Let a professional inspect the carpet and paddings for mold growth and other damages. When you’re sure that you can no longer smell the musty scent, you can use an odor neutralizer to take the smell away.

Tip #2 Avoid using the white vinegar mix

White vinegar mixed with water is an effective solution for carpet stains but not for carpet water damage. Vinegar leaves off an acidic smell that stays for weeks or more. Baking soda is also an effective way to absorb small water damage spots, but it’s not enough to absorb the large pooling water in the carpet. More so if the water looks and smells dirty. If such is the case, calling the help of a professional carpet cleaner is your next option.

Is a DIY project an option

Dealing with carpet water damage is challenging, but many would take on the task because they want to save their money. However, machines readily available in your home, such as vacuum, ceiling fans, ad towels, aren’t enough to restore and protect your carpet from water damage. Professionals have the right tools and drying equipment to prevent further damage. They can evaluate your mat and go from there. They don’t do any unnecessary steps. Instead, their main goal is to remediate the damage and prevent the total loss.
